New Yorkers by the thousands jog through the city's parks and streets, bike and roller blade from the Battery to the Bronx, pump iron in gyms everywhere and even sweat to the oldies at home - but is it all for naught?
A new survey says we're in lousy shape.
So lousy that Men's Health magazine has branded New York the sixth-fattest city in America in its admittedly unscientific seventh annual fittest/fattest study.
Chicago weighed in as chunky town No. 1, deposing Houston, which had that dubious distinction for four of the previous five years. Baltimore won the most buff title.
The magazine says it rated cities by weighing 14 factors, including the number of fast-food restaurants per capita, TV watching, air quality, parks, sporting goods stores and gyms.
But don't beat yourself up because you like a burger, some fries and an egg cream or two now and then.
If we're a tad, say, fulsome, maybe we can point our fingers at Mayor Bloomberg and Gov. Pataki.
The ranking "is not really based upon what a person does at the dinner table," Men's Fitness editor Neal Boulton explained. "It's not about going around counting the number of overweight people.
"It's about a call of arms to mayors and governors to provide public health initiatives that will stem the tide of obesity," he said. So, there.
The reaction of folks in Baltimore, where things deep-fried go like crab cakes, to being first in fitness?
"I think this is probably the most mis-fit city in America," declared Charisse Bailey before happily going back to her typical Baltimore lunch: fried red snapper on thick white bread, with a side of french fries and a mug of suds.
In Fat City, Chicagoans toasted their No. 1 ranking with another slice of deep-dish pizza.
