Hundreds of dead poultry raise bird flu fears in Israel

Email this story

Hundreds of poultry were found dead in a kibbutz in southern Israel raising fears of the first outbreak of deadly bird flu in the Jewish state.
"We have found hundreds of dead poultry and other sick birds on a kibbutz in the south of Israel, which makes us worried about the appearance of the bird flu virus," one agriculture ministry official told AFP.

"The initial tests indicated it was bird flu although these were not the final results and everything is still being tested in the laboratories", another official said.
Dozens of dead chickens were also found in communities close to the Ein Hashlosha kibbutz in the Negev desert east of the Gaza border, the website of the Haaretz daily reported.
Both the kibbutz and the adjacent communities were sealed off by the agricultural ministry, the website said.
Israel imposed a ban on all meat imports from the Gaza Strip on February 17 following the discovery of the deadly H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus in Egypt.
The outbreak of bird flu in Egypt on Israel's southern border saw flocks destroyed and transport restrictions imposed to stem the spread of a disease costing the industry around 1.7 million dollars a day.

Lethal bird flu confirmed in kibbutzim; flocks to be killed By JUDY SIEGEL-ITZKOVITCH, AMIR MIZROCH, AP, AND JPOST.COM

The Health Ministry confirmed on Friday that the virus responsible for the recent deaths of approximately 11,000 turkeys at the southern kibbutzim of Holit and Ein Hashlosha was indeed the H5 strain. The same strain was identified at Kibbutz Nachshon near Beit Shemesh, following an unusual amount of poultry deaths. Three people from Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha, who worked at the chicken coops, were sent to Soroka Hospital under suspicion that they contracted the deadly bird flu strain. One of them, a Thai worker was held in isolation. The Health Ministry ordered the flocks of turkeys on all three kibbutzim be destroyed, and the carcasses buried underground. The poultry were to be killed by consumption of poisoned water. The poultry killed may reach hundreds of thousands of birds. After its meeting to discuss the response to a bird flu outbreak, the Agriculture Ministry announced on Friday that they would continue the veterinary quarantine over the southern kibbutzim of Holit and Ein Hashlosha. They also decided to test fowl in other farms in the region. Chief veterinarian of the Agriculture Ministry Dr. Shimon Pokamunski told Israel Radio that it had not yet been decided to launch a massive vaccination campaign, but should that decision be made, the Health Ministry would be ready to proceed within three days. Health officials repeatedly reminded the public that the avian flu primarily affects birds. It was very rare for the virus to make the transition into a human host. Even in cases where humans do contract the disease, it is generally limited to people who come in direct contact with fowl, usually bird handlers in chicken coops. Unfortunately, mortality tends to be high in cases when it is contracted.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An outbreak of deadly bird flu in Israel is God's punishment for calls in election ads to legalize gay marriages, according to Rabbi David Basri, a prominent sage preaching Kabbalah or Jewish mysticism. "The Bible says that God punishes depravity first through plagues against animals and then in people," Basri said in a religious edict quoted by his son. Basri said he hoped the deaths of hundreds of thousands of turkeys and chickens would help atone for what he called the sins of left-wing Israeli political parties, the son, Rabbi Yitzhak Basri, told Reuters, a week before a national election. The bird flu outbreak stemmed from far-left political parties "strengthening and encouraging homosexuality," Rabbi Basri's son quoted him as saying. One of the parties aired an election commercial depicting two brides kissing. Some campaign advertisements also called for homosexual marriages to be legalized in Israel. Basri is a prominent Kabbalist and author of commentaries on the Zohar, the main Kabbalah mystical text.
