What if you spent hundreds of millions of dollars on a travel Web site -- but no one used it? USA Today reports that the Pentagon has spent $474 million so far (up from initial estimates of $263 million) on a travel booking system for military personnel that cannot locate the cheapest airfares, does not offer a complete list of flights and hotels, and won't recognize travel codes required for National Guard and Reserves soldiers. In fact, a Congressional subcommittee investigating the system at 42 different bases found that 83 percent of the military travelers required to use the booking system have been calling professional travel agents on the outside to find their flights, hotels, and rental car details before typing them into the system! Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) plans to introduce a bill next year requiring the military to return to using travel agents, saying the current system ''would be the same as directing all [Department of Defense] personnel to speak Arabic in order to save money on translation services.'' He points out that, while the Pentagon claims the electronic booking system saves money on travel agent fees, it didn't count the cost of having troops spend 30 minutes planning a trip that a professional travel agent could have booked in five minutes. http://www.ossn.com/news/newsdetails.asp?ID=2557
