Sgt. Hein |
Monroe – The State Police Troop F zone sergeant at the Monroe Barracks collapsed and died while shoveling snow at his home New Paltz, a State Police Troop F Commander Major Ed Raso said.
Sgt. Warner Hein, who was the zone sergeant at the Monroe Barracks and was with the State Police for 20 years, was shoveling snow around 7:30 a.m. today when he collapsed and died of an apparent heart attack, the spokesman said.
Hein was 44 years old and the brother of Ulster County Administrator Michael Hein.
He was the State Police liaison for the Hassidic Village of Kiryas Joel and well liked and respected in the greater Monroe community. ''He was a very likeable guy; a very capable guy,'' said Major Raso. ''He was the prototypical supervisor to be a liaison to any type of community.''
"The loss is immeasurable to Kiryas Joel and the Greater Jewish community of New York - and above all to every man and woman in the New York State Police," Rabbi Bernard Freilich said. ''His work, his courage, his compassion, was just unmatchable,'' he said.
The Rabbi said Hein was a person ''who understood the community, had vast knowledge of our communities' complex laws and customs, and was a man who was always there when needed.''
Hein is survived by his wife, Nina, and his four-year-old son, Warner Hein, Jr.
Sgt. Hein was an avid sportsman and a former New Paltz High School football player.
