CB1 DM: DEP Delays Just Plain Rotten Accusing the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) of ignoring ''elementary science,'' Community Board 1 District Manager Gerald Esposito took the city agency to task for the failure to fix several roads in the district.
The community board has long been pressing for trench restoration – such as repairing depressed roadways and fixing curbs and sidewalks where sewer work was completed - for several streets, but DEP recently revealed that construction would be delayed another year due to inadequate funding.
Last year, the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) announced that nearly 20 locations in Community Board 1 would be fixed, and that work would begin in the fall of 2009.
However, Esposito said that when he followed up on the project, he learned that the repairs wouldn't begin until June of 2010 because DEP lacked the necessary funding.
Esposito says that the trenches created by the sewer work were ''lined with wooden planks. These planks were never removed because they were allowed to be buried as fill.'' Esposito explained that over time the wood has rotted away, causing the streets to sink, a clear problem the agency should have foreseen. – Timothy Fleming
