| | פרשיית ניסיון הרצח של חיים אהרן רוטנברג מעיירת ניו סקווירא מסרבת לרדת מסדר היום הציבורי: אם עד עתה הסתפקו בחסידות במכתב שהוציאו בית הדין של הקהילה המגנה אלימות, כעת נרשמה התבטאות מהדרג הגבוה בחסידות, האדמו"ר עצמו.
האדמו"ר השתתף בליל שישי במעמד סיום מסכת שנערך לתלמידי הישיבה בשיכון סקווירא, במהלך דברות הקודש שנשא התייחס האדמו"ר לפרשיה ודיבר ארוכות שהדרך בחסידות, מאז ומתמיד, הייתה נגד אלימות ומעשים כגון אלו.
בהמשך דבריו ביקש שיתפללו על הפצוע, שה' ישלח לו רפואה שלימה. "ערב חג השבועות הוא זמן של ויחן ישראל כנגד ההר ויהי רצון שזה יקויים בקהילה", סיים האדמו"ר את התבטאותו הנדירה.

"חג השבועות הוא זמן של רפואה ויהי רצון שיתקיים בעיירה כאן "ויחן ישראל" כאיש אחד בלב אחד", סיים האדמו"ר את דבריו. היהדות החרדית סוערת מאז מוצ"ש האחרון, לאחר שהאברך אהרון רוטנברג המתגורר בשיכון החסידי נפצע קשה בכל חלקי גופו מבקבוק תבערה שהשליך לעבר ביתו. האברך עדיין מאושפז בבית החולים, וההערכה היא כי הרקע למעשה היא החלטתו של רוטנברג לפתוח מניין נפרד לתפילה בשבתות וחגים, בניגוד לדעתו של האדמו"ר ובסתירה לתקנות המקום. בימים האחרונים גינו את המעשה גם בד"ץ סקווירא וראשי הקהילה שהוציאו מכתב מפורט שתקף את הפעולה הנוראה. למרות זאת, עד עתה לא היתה התייחסות ישירה של האדמו"ר עצמו לנושא הרגיש. אתמול, כאמור, זה קרה לראשונה. _________________

Grand rabbi addresses religious dispute at New Square synagogue (05/27/11) NEW SQAURE - The grand rabbi of a New Square synagogue spoke out today about an alleged arson attack that left a man critically burned. Aron Rottenberg, 43, has severe burns over half his body following an attack several days ago. His family says the attack stems from the fact that he doesn't worship at the Hassidic community's main synagogue. Instead, they say he prays at the Friedwald Center for nursing and rehabilitation. Grand Rabbi David Twersky said on a website that the incident brought a lot of tears and pain. He also said whoever needs healing, God should send them healing. In addition, the rabbi went on to state "it's against our ways" to hurt any Jews. Charged in the attack is 18-year-old Shaul Spitzer. He is facing charges of attempted murder, arson and assault. Police are continuing to investigate and say there is no evidence that the grand rabbi is involved in the attack. The Rottenberg family is now calling for a state and federal investigation into the case. Rockland County, NY - Congressman Engel Condemns New Square Attack, As Feds Might Get Involved Police Say |

He said the attack evoked “the Ku Klux Klan and Nazi Germany.” Sussman’s letter dated this past Thursday to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said intolerance has long infected New Square.
Police said they would investigate thoroughly, but Sussman said local authorities do little because of the congregation’s political influence. New Square often delivers a bloc vote. For example, in the 2000 U.S. Senate race, Democratic contender Hillary Rodham Clinton took 1,400 of New Square’s 1,412 votes. Detective Lt. Mark Emma of the Ramapo police said that “there may be federal crimes involved” and that his department would not rule out assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI. Anti-Defamation League spokesman Todd Gutnick said the organization would await the results of the Ramapo police investigation before commenting. The state Attorney General’s Office does not have original jurisdiction and can only get involved if it receives a referral from the Governor’s Office, according to state executive law. The Rockland District Attorney’s Office would have to make the referral to the governor. District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said his office is working with Ramapo police in their investigation. Meanwhile, According to the Journal News, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer declined comment, spokesman Matt House said, But Congressman Eliot Engel issued a statement According to Mid Hudson News, calling for justice in the attack on Rottenberg. “Justice must be vigorously pursued in this case”, said Engel (D-17), whose district includes New Square. “The alleged assailant has been arrested and charged. Now it is time for us to step back and let justice pursue its course. It is essential that this crime be thoroughly investigated to determine the extent of culpability. I am confident in our system of justice, but I will be monitoring these events very closely, and if at any time I believe it is going off course, I will not hesitate to speak out and call for further action. _________________
