Path to Ideal Judaism #3
If we reflect upon any law system, be it religious or secular, Torah or else, we will realize that two basic types of laws exist. One of intrinsic value and one of extrinsic value. The type of intrinsic value includes all laws that are absolute and (upon understanding their meaning) self evident as a value. Like not to murder, not to steal or damage humans, living species and the environement. The laws stemming from that type of value we shall call ethical values.
The extrinsic type of value is one which helps us keep the intrinsic type. We establish all kinds of reminders so that we don't forget and that we integrate the importance of being compatible (moral etc...). We respect symbols which represent our law system etc... This is typical of the laws that stem from the extrinsic value. We shall call these laws disciplinary values.
This is the general dividing guideline within the Mitvoth between the intrinsic and the extrinsic principles.
Besides that general division, each category, the intrinsic-ethical and the extrinsic-disciplinary are in turn divided each into two kinds: General and Specific.
The general are more abstract and inclusive and the specific consist of details.
The intrinsic ones being essential and based in reality are less prone to change since they represent the laws of nature, whereas the extrinsic ones being only supportive may vary in their applicability between times, situations and individuals.

בדו-שיח באישי על משמעות ההחמרות בהלכה, נכתב:
ההחמרות נובעות מהפחד לפגוע במערכת המשמעתית עד שהן נהפכות למפלצת משתקת.

The basic questions that justify Judaism are:
1. Do you have a better way for uplifting ordinary life than with the discipline provided by institutional structure?
2. If you agree that you don't, I have another question. Do you know of any better institutional structure encompassing human life than Judaism?
