You start out with the historical background to the הלכה, which forbids contact with a גוי. The הלכה presents a clear logical sequence of יינם משום בנותיהן ובנותיהן משום דבר אחר. You even mention that there is a possibility that a contemporary relationship might result in intermarriage a la American Jews, but you still develop the debate further in the direction of trying to differentiate between ancient pagans and modern agnostics, as if the debate centers around that aspect. But the question is: Isn't the original הלכה clear enough about the reason for separation between Jews and Non-Jews? Intermarriage!
Now, let's get back to your issue of whether contemporary גויים are עובדי אלילים or not. The debate is definitely interesting, but I wonder, should you find that contemporary גויים are okay, since they aren't pagans, would you reverse the entire original logic accordingly? In other words, perhaps we would be able to accept, according to the new logic, intermarriage.

Maimoni,
My argument was that if you allow for loopholes in the stringency of the Halacha concerning the separation of Jews and Gentiles, based on the Meiri's or any other logic that things have changed since ancient times, then why not allow for a loophole in the Halacha against intermarriage as well? After all, the original Halacha has many components to its logic, namely, pagan worship, homosexual activities, possibility of murder when in the company of a Gentile, etc. So once you agree that the Halacha doesn't really apply to modern Gentiles, since most of these old concerns don't apply, and as the Meiri tries to convey, then why not remove the prohibition against intermarriage as well?
You might counter that the Halacha still stands regardless of whether the original motivation for it holds true, but if so, than who permitted the Meiri to play with the Halacha's stringency, and what is this current debate all about?
On the other side of the debate, it can be argued, as you and some others did, that the Halachic separation of Jew and Gentile is to shelter Jews from non-Jewish values and way of life, regardless to pagan components of them. If that is the case, then you should also embrace the stringent separation between religious Jew and non-religious Jew as embraced by Hungarian Orthodoxy.
Remember, I am not here to promote any of my above arguments one way or the other, I am simply trying to widen the debate.

In regards to the possible reason for not allowing Jewish-Gentile relations (I am talking here in the Platonic sense) because of concern of acquiring un-Jewish values and their way of life, I would assume that most of the participants here live in Israel, where the relationship between Jew and Gentile is mostly antagonistic, plus the Jews are in the majority. However, in the United States, where the relationship is cordial and the Gentiles are in the majority, the possibility of acquiring the ''others'' way of life is very real.
How about if those of you from Israel, look at the Jewish-Gentile relationship through the prism of Secular-Dati relations in Israel? Perhaps it will shed some light on the entire scope of inter-religious relationship, without having to get into the intricacies of Catholic and Protestant modes of worship.

Maimoni,
I have no interest to promote intermarriage. My point was that once we start making excuses, for instance, for allowing פתם, based on the fact that contemporary Goyim are different, then inevitably יינם is not far behind, and so it continues.
Also, Reb Maimoni, please refer to my other comments too. I'd like to hear your opinions on these as well.
