By accepting as a given that a woman in biblical times always adopted the man's religious affiliation upon marriage, you seem to give too little credit to Biblical women's assertiveness. You are probably viewing these women through our modern notions of what "traditional" marriage norms are, where women are subjugated to their husband's religious affiliation. But looking at the bible, that doesn't appear to be the case. Biblical women appear to have asserted much more independence in their religious affairs than contemporary traditional women. ערפה and רות had complete independence in making their religious choices. Even איזבל who was married to the idolater אחאב, also worshipped to a different set of idols, which she brought along from her native land, as did the wives of שלמה.

In addition, I think that the change that occurred in עזרא's era has nothing to do with the changing religious attitudes of the women, or of the man. Up to the Babylonian exile, there was no threat to the Jewish peoplehood by admitting foreign men and women into the fold (whatever that meant in that era), regardless of their adherence to the Jewish faith. The Israelites were anchored to their land, and they didn't have to fear that by admitting some "foreigners," both male and female, in their midst, the demographics would be altered. However, once they were exiled into a foreign land, where they became a small minority, the threat of total assimilating into the host culture became quite serious. That's when the new standards were enacted. It was designed to safeguard the Jewish nation against totally assimilating into the alien culture, which would have resulted in a possible end to the nation of Israel.

Aryeh,
Just a quick note on your observation about Ruth, Urpah, Isabel, and Shlomos wives.
You see religious autonomy on their part, well I beg to differ.
As was already mentioned here somewhat, the women in biblical times hardly had a say on religious affiliation but it's really much more than that it simply wasn't an issue it sort of went without saying that when a woman got married she participates in all the customs of her husband wich includes his religion. It was simple proper behaviour, it wasn't any mind shattering decision.
What happens when the husband dies? Then she simply returns to her parents house and to their respective customs and religion.

To really bring it home just look at our days and times as to Hasidic affiliation. The wife just follows the husband as a matter of course.

Achov wasn't monotheistic and he had no problem with some other gods and who knows maybe it helps (he thought)

The way the Tanach portrays the situation with Shlomo it seems that even he didn't have this strong feeling of exclusivity i.e. that "only" his God is the one, [and that is precisely what the biblical chronicler finds fault with Shlomo]
so here again its not that they were assertive its just that it didn't bother their husbands.

By the way, the anology with Hasidic affiliation can maybe have other applications too.
For maybe in those times Religion wasn't so solidified and entrenched in its being mutually exclusive, just like Hasidic affiliations are today.

Ipcha,

It's nice seeing you around!

In your observation of Biblical women, you may falling into exactly the same trap of projecting that I had tried to warn about; you are placing the Biblical characters within the same environment that we live in. But that was exactly what I tried to repudiate. Look at the following passage:

There is another passage that assigns blame to Ahab's transgressions to Isabel.
So here you have two of the most powerful kings, of both kingdoms, falling under the spell of their religiously independent wives. Some might be tempted to attribute the ''blame placing'' in the bible on women as a result of a misogynistic streak, but there are also indications of Biblical women with independent religious views, among the religiously observant as well. Shmuel's mother Chana, Shamshon's mother, and the Shunamit, all married women, do chart an independent religious course (you might say though, that's theirs are more spiritual than religious), in which their husbands take a following role rather than a leading role. Even the story of Ruth, indicates that her conversion was not as a result of simply following her late husband's religious affiliation, but was her own calling.

Regardless of all this, my main point was to underscore the difference in the Jewish approach to converts in Biblical and Diaspora times. This has little to do with how women asserted their religious views.
