Anti-Jewish crimes increase at end of 2003

A new study shows anti-Semitic incidents in the city rose during the last quarter of 2003 to their highest point in three years.
In total, 57 anti-Jewish crimes including the spray-painting of swastikas and anti-Semitic slurs, were recorded for the final three months of last year, according to the study, which was conducted by Rep. Anthony Weiner and was released Friday.
During the same period in 2002, there were 31 such incidents.
Abraham Foxman, director of the Anti-Defamation League, said the findings are congruent with his organization's findings in other parts of the world. He said there are reports of anti-Semitic crimes elsewhere due to strained relations between Israelis and Palestinians.
The rise in the crimes began on Oct. 4, when eight Hasidic families were left homeless by a suspicious fire. But police say they do not see a long-term trend developing.
Police records show a total of 108 anti-Semitic incidents throughout 2003 compared with 114 in 2002.
Meanwhile, Weiner called for passage of the federal Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which would give police departments more power to fight bias crimes.
