This type of story falls into the category of what is commonly known as 'historical fiction.' The writer wants to portray a certain period in time or a particular personality, but lacks concrete information to base a fully developed true story on. He would then ''construct'' his own version of events, filling in the gaps, based on fragments of real people or real events.
In many of these stories there is a grain or two of truth, but sometimes there is nothing more to go on. The problem is when certain readers or ''interested parties'' start confusing a book designed as historical fiction with real history.
I remember one such book; יאשע קאלב by the great Yiddish writer I.S. Singer (brother of Nobel Laureate I.B. Singer). The story catapulted Singer's career. It is loosely based on a true case that gripped the Jewish community more than 100 years ago, about a man who disappeared and resurfaced years later, after his wife remarried, claiming that the woman is his wife. One of the Rabbonim involved in the case was the שינאווער רב (son of the דברי חיים). However, what the writer did was to place the שינאווער רב in the center of the story, ripe with court intrigue, lust, and dynastic warfare. I've seen through the years an occasional reference to the story as if the events depicted really happened as portrayed.

I think the ''message'' is quite obvious; to sock it to the חב"ד Chassidim, by parading their dirty laundry in public.
