You are right that we have to be careful not to fall into the trap of ''ritualizing'' the מצוה of ניחום אבלים, by looking for "מקורות" for מנהגי אבלות. Not the רמב"ם, nor anyone else is to be consulted for this purely psychological undertaking. The reason there is so much confusion in our society, with some disastrous results, in the ''act'' of comforting the bereaved, is precisely because everyone is looking for מקורות, and nobody is following a natural psychological approach.
You may be right about the need to keep mum in the presences of an אבל, but that has to be based on an understanding of human emotions. Or, it might be argued that simply acting ''natural'' will help avoid a lot of confusion. Do you think that גויים, for instance, don't know how to comfort a bereft friend?

How about, if instead of ritualizing the practice, we introduce a general healthy approach on how to deal with other people's (and our own) emotions? It will help in other areas as well. In religious society, all natural expression, from rage to sadness to helplessness, have ''rules.'' If someone doesn't act accordingly, they are usually reprimanded ''מ'זאגט נישט אזוי, מ'שרייט נישט אזוי, מ'וויינט נישט אזוי.
I understand that religion has rules on the emotional areas of life too. But when these are taken to an extreme, the results are a confusion of priorities. Take for example the angst that almost every Charedi youngster has about ''shedding tears'' during the Holy Days, lest he be labeled by that dreadful label the אר"י applied to those that don't shed tears during that time.
I don't remember who was the one that wrote in a previous cluster about the awkward situation, even the bereaved parties find themselves in, when having to conform to protocol.

כולם
There was a recent uproar about a גיורת in New York (there was even a cluster opened about it here). As a result, a string of letters was published on the net, some by the גיורת, other by her detractors.
In one of the letters written to the גיורת, supposedly to explain what ''real'' Judaism is about, there is an interesting observation. In it, the writer explains the difference between the ''Goiyishe'' way of comforting a girlfriend or wife, and the orthodox Jewish way of doing that. Of course, the writer accepts it as matter-of-fact that the Jewish way is not only religiously sound, but is also consistent with the true definition of love.
I would love to hear your observations on it.
''In the secular world, when a boy and girl go out on a few dates and it so happens that on one evening the mood turns sad and emotional and ultimately reaches a point where the girl is really hurting, and she starts crying, sobbing and shaking. Her man, in response, naturally puts an arm around her and allows her to bury her face in his chest. A Jewish boy and girl can't do that. You know what the boy does? He is forced to fire up his brain and use words to calm her. He cushions her in comfort through communication. He talks to her heart. Do you see the difference? Do you see the beauty?''

You are referring to ceremonial events, while I was talking about emotional expressions. Of course, I agree that ''official events'' need a certain decorum, which can have either a religious or a secular context. I believe that the traditional bereavement setting may indeed be beautiful (although I don't wish such beauty on anyone), from the requirement of the seven-day mourning period to the sitting on the floor to tearing the clothes. All these are ''ceremonial'' expressions of grief.
My problem is with what is supposed to be instinctive expressions of ones emotions. You are right; we need a canopy for a wedding, and perhaps even a white gown for the bride. But do we tell well-wishers the exact three words they are required to say to the newlyweds?
