Customer Gives Pizza Man His Own Card
OSLO, Norway - When Vegard Sjaastad delivered a pizza near the western Norwegian town of Aalesund, there was something familiar about the customer's credit card. It was his card, and had been stolen the day before.
"It was like I met myself in the doorway," the 24-year-old said by telephone Tuesday. "It was my picture on the back of the card."
Sjaastad, who manages a Peppes Pizza restaurant, his drivers license and his Visa card stolen from his car on Saturday night at his father's house. He canceled the card, and reported the theft.
He was training a new driver on Monday, and they delivered the pizzeria's 'Film Package:" a pizza, soft drinks, and the film "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on DVD.
A man with a credit card answered the door, and clearly did not recognize Sjaastad from the picture embossed on all Norwegian Visa cards.
"I wasn't going to play hero. I'm pretty calm by nature. I just accepted the card and said 'I hope you enjoy the meal,' as we always say," he told The Associated Press.
With the address from the order form in hand, Sjaastad called the police to give an exact location of the suspects.
"I figured they could enjoy the pizza and film, as long as it lasted," he said.
Police arrived about 30 minutes later, arrested three people, and recovered suspected stolen goods, at least some of it Sjaastad's.
"I expect to get my stuff back tomorrow," he said. "This is just great. What you might dream of."

Prisoner escaped to buy MacDonald's
An escaped prisoner was caught trying to get back into a Tennessee jail with four MacDonald's hamburgers.
The suspected armed robber was caught by a police officer outside Roane County Jail, reports WVLT-TV news.
Sergeant Wes Stooksbury arrested the man and says he was carrying a package containing clothes, liquor, preion pills, crack cocaine - and the burgers.
It is unclear whether the man was planning to keep his haul for himself or if he was trying to smuggle it in to sell to other prisoners.
It's believed he had escaped for only a short time. The Roane Sheriff's Department is still investigating the case.

Infant dies after mom allegedly puts him in dryer
Associated Press
Dec. 7, 2005 10:51 AM
BOGALUSA, La. - A mother was booked on a charge of first-degree murder for allegedly placing her 3-month-old son in a clothes dryer and turning it on.
The infant had third-degree burns over 50 percent of his body and suffered blunt force trauma to the head, the St. Tammany Parish coroner said.
Police Sgt. Darryl Darden said Lakeisha Adams, 18, called police to her home on Monday to report that someone had killed her child. When officers arrived, they found Jailand Adams on a sofa. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Darden said Adams admitted during questioning to putting the infant in the dryer and turning it on, but did not say why.
Adams also has a 1-year-old child who was placed in state custody, police said.
If convicted, Adams faces death by injection or a life sentence. The first-degree murder charge is mandatory under Louisiana law because the victim was under age 12.

Remote-controlled toilets
A US company has come up with the perfect gift for people who have everything - a £3,000 remote-controlled toilet.
The state-of-the-art Neorest toilet, from Toto, is sleek, compact and automated, reports the Arizona Republic.
Approach it, and the lid lifts up, stand in front of it and the seat rises. The Neorest automatically flushes and lowers the lid upon completion.
The remote controls the temperature of the seat. It also activates the gentle cleansing process.
A wand extends from the back of the rim and sprays water upward. Water aim and temperature can be controlled by the seated occupant. Then comes the air dryer.
Leslie Shirey, a salesperson at the Central Arizona Supply showroom, admitted sales had been slow - because of the price.
But the Neorest has found some converts among Hollywood celebrities, including Will Smith, who gushed about it during an interview on Access Hollywood.
The toilets are also installed in the main headquarters of Google.

Mayor wants to ban death
The mayor of a Brazilian town is trying to bring in a law making it illegal for residents to die.
Mayor Roberto Pereira da Silva, of Biritiba-Mirim, came up with the idea because the town's only cemetery is full.
He wants to bring in a law that would see relatives of people who die before their time face fines or even jail.
The law would make it an offence for the town's 28,000 citizens to not look after their health properly.
Mayor Pereira da Silva said there was no way of expending the cemetery or building a new one, reports Agora Sao Paulo.
He said: "Eighty nine per cent of the town is rivers, the rest is protected because it is tropical jungle."
The state government had promised to help build a new vertical cemetery - but nothing had been done.
Gym memberships have reportedly shot up since the mayor announced his plans, and more people are visiting doctors.

Drunk driver rang police
A drunk driver was arrested in Germany after he accidentally rang the police instead of a breakdown service when he had a flat tyre.
Before he realised who he was speaking to, the 31-year-old let it slip that he had no licence and was driving under the influence.
The civil servant, who lost his licence eight years ago, had a blow out in the western town of Monheim while driving a car borrowed from a friend.
He had a blood alcohol level that was seven times the legal limit, and when he tried to call the German equivalent of the AA he became confused and dialled the emergency number for the police.
The drunken man phoned and said: "My car is broken and I need you to come and fix it. You better be quick because I'm really pretty drunk and I don't have a licence so it wouldn't be good if the cops drove past."
A Monheim police spokesman said: "He wanted us to come quickly, so we did."

New Zealand Man Tries to Rob Bank by Phone
Dec 9, 7:24 PM (ET)
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - A man who robbed a New Zealand bank was so disappointed with his haul he tried again - this time by phone, police said Saturday.
"He's rung (the bank) and said 'I'm the guy who robbed you the other day and I want the manager to put some money in a bag and go and stand in the street," said Detective Sergeant Chris Winder of the Auckland Police.
"(He said) 'I'll drive by slowly and take the bag from you and drive off.'"
A plain clothes police officer stood outside the bank in the northern city of Auckland on Friday carrying a bag but the man did not appear. Instead, he called again.
"A phone call was made by the offender saying, 'I've been watching and I don't like what I see,'" Winder said. "He said 'can you meet me down (the road) instead.'"
A plain clothes officer waited for the man at the second rendezvous but he again failed to appear.
Police traced the calls and arrested a man Saturday, charging him with aggravated robbery and demanding money with menaces.

Company To Workers: Light Up And You're Fired
POSTED: 3:55 pm EST December 10, 2005
MARYSVILLE, Ohio -- Quit smoking, or you're fired.
That's what Scotts Miracle-Gro is telling its employees. If they don't quit smoking by October, they'll lose their jobs.
The lawn and garden company is trying to keep health insurance costs down by promoting healthy lifestyles for its employees.
Its chairman and chief executive, James Hagedorn, said the company shouldn't have to shoulder health risks for employees who smoke. It pays for 75 percent of employees' health insurance.
The Ohio-based company has 6,000 employees. It said it can fire smokers legally in 21 states.
Workers who smoke can get free counseling, nicotine patches and classes on quitting.
A spokesman said the company hasn't yet decided how it will enforce the smoking ban.

Man goes wrong way on highway for 11 miles
Dec 12, 12:26 PM (ET)
STRASBOURG, France (Reuters) - A Frenchman drove up a motorway in the wrong direction for 11 miles, crashing into five other vehicles and killing one person and injuring three others including two children, police said.
The 66-year-old man continued driving after his first two collisions Sunday in the hope of finding an exit off the A35 in eastern France, a police spokesman in the city of Strasbourg said.
No one was injured in the first collision with two vehicles, but one person was seriously hurt in a second accident with two other vehicles.
The retired motorist, driving with his wife, only came to a halt when he collided head-on with another car, killing an adult and seriously injuring two children aboard. Police said the victims were among a family of immigrants from the former Soviet Union.
Police said alcohol tests on the driver proved negative and he could not explain why he had turned the wrong way onto the motorway. He was in shock but he and his wife were otherwise unhurt.

Eat paper for dinner at $240!
Hindustan Times
New Delhi, December 12, 2005
A picture may be worth a thousand words, but is it dinner? At Chicago's trendy Moto restaurant, it is: a 20course tasting menu can begin with 'sushi' made of paper that has been printed with images of maki and wrapped around vinegared rice and conclude with a mint-flavoured picture of a candy cane.
Should you fail to finish a course, Homaro Cantu, Moto's executive chef, will emerge from the kitchen with a refund: a phony dollar bill flavoured to taste like a cheeseburger and fries. It may sound like some sort of Surrealist stunt with dire intestinal consequences, but here's the rub: the 'food' tastes good. Good enough to lure diners back at $240 per head (including wine).
At Moto in Chicago, dinner might begin with 'sushi' made of edible paper printed with images of of amki using food-based inks.
Cantu, who says that as a child he had "a fascination with how things tasted, especially inedible things," has essentially combined a high-end kitchen with a Kinko's.
Using a modified ink-jet printer and organic, food-based inks, he prints images of food (and other objects) on specially designed paper made of modified food starch.
He skillfully adds intensely flavoured liquid seasoning, and voilà: a printout of a cow that tastes like filet mignon. (The paper itself is neutral-tasting and free of allergens and calories; the flavourings are stable, with a long shelf life, and may contain amino acids and other added nutrients.) A la carte Using a printer and organic inks, images of food are printed on special paper Intensely flavoured liquid seasoning is added The result: an edible printout
