Scientists say that chemicals in red wine could help prevent and treat gum disease.
A study conducted by the Universite Laval in Canada and presented to the American Association for Dental Research identified the abilities of polyphenols in red wine to block the production of 'free radicals', which can damage gum tissue.
Periodontitis, a form of gum disease, is the leading cause of teeth loss and affects millions of people world wide.
The study suggests that polyphenols may stop free radical production, adding to the list of health benefits of moderate red wine consumption. Previous studies have linked red wine with the reduction of risk for both cancer and heart disease.
However, British experts are sceptical about the latest findings. 'This wouldn't appear to show that red wine actually prevents periodontal disease,' says professor Liz Kay, scientific adviser to the British Dental Association.
'The sure way of doing so is to keep your mouth perfectly clean. That's achieved by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.'
The British Dental Health Foundation has advised people that red wine can cause other dental problems, and is not necessarily good for teeth. It says that acidity in red wine could cause dental erosion.
