Bloomberg not likely to be president:
by Barbara Leonard

A majority of New York City voters say they wouldn't vote for Mayor Michael Bloomberg if he made a run for the White House although a majority also think it's unlikely he'll try, according to a recent poll.

Sixty-two percent of respondents to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday think Mr. Bloomberg is "not too likely" or "not likely at all" to run for president.

Despite a 72% approval rating and 70% of voters endorsing his habit of taking a stance on national issues, only 40% of voters say they would "definitely" or "probably" vote for Mr. Bloomberg in a presidential election.

"Mayor Bloomberg's new outspokenness hasn't persuaded most New Yorkers that he has his eye on the White House," Quinnipiac University Polling Institute director Maurice Carroll said in a statement. "But there's a hefty minority who think he might."

On downtown issues, slightly more than 50% of those polled approved of the new designs for the World Trade Center Memorial and the Freedom Tower, but 52% say the rebuilding effort is going "somewhat" or "very badly."

New Yorkers were split over the degree of input from families of those killed on Sept. 11, with 41% rating their input as adequate, 21% calling it insufficient and another 28% saying the families have too much input.

Quinnipiac surveyed 1,041 New York City registered voters from July 5 to 10, with a 3% margin of error.
